African Creche

Three ebony kings:
tall and astute with
blond mkongo hats
like Sufis --
and the shepherds, two
straggling mujahideen --
kneel with a Yusef who
could be fresh from a
Sudanese jail, or torture
chamber in Mogadishu.

And Maryam, speechless,
bound heart and soul
by the angel --

and the child -- what of
the hungry, life-clinging child?
